What is New Horizons in Responsible Gambling?

Since 2013, BCLC has been proud to host the New Horizons in Responsible Gambling conference in Vancouver, B.C. This landmark event brings together hundreds of industry-leading researchers, policy makers and representatives from around the world to discuss developments, innovations, and best practices for player health and responsible gambling.

As a major player in the regulated gambling industry, BCLC recognizes and values the importance of offering world-class entertainment with the highest level of social responsibility. New Horizons gives those in the gambling industry the opportunity to interact with international experts and help advance the knowledge and support for responsible gambling and player health everywhere.

Thanks to the information and conversations shared at New Horizons, BCLC and other conference attendees have grown and strengthened their responsible gambling, prevention and support programs.

What was new in 2020?

Last year, keynote speaker Lieutenant-General (ret.) Romeo Dallaire told us, “Status quo is regression”. He challenged us to look to the future and never rest when it comes to finding innovative solutions to problem gambling.

Inspired by his energy and words, we brought a whole new look and experience to New Horizons 2020.

This year’s conference theme was “Future-proofing the Gambling Industry”, where leading experts and attendees discussed three key areas our industry faces today, including:

  • Promoting safer play behaviours/decreasing risky play;
  • Reducing harms associated with gambling products and/or environments; and
  • Developing a culture that prioritizes the wellbeing of consumers.

We also worked with three leading experts to compile go-to reference papers that put all the evidence in one place: what’s working, what’s not, and what we need to know more about.

Missed the 2020 conference? We created a summary paper that reviews some of the key elements and discussions from the event, breaks down the issues, and provides implementable solutions for the industry. You can also see the presentations and speakers from 2020 and get caught up before the virtual conference in 2021.
