Supporting Gaming Workers: Research Insights and Program Outcomes

Gaming workers exhibit higher rates of problem gambling than the general population. This presentation will describe Special Populations programming developed specifically for gaming workers.

Surveys were conducted with gaming workers to determine their perspectives on responsible and problem gambling, as well as gambling behaviour. This research aimed to uncover some of the factors associated with problem gambling amongst gaming workers and determine whether employee problem gambling is linked to workplace factors or a pre-disposed affinity to gamble by those who seek employment in a gaming facility.

The results of these surveys were used to develop and update programs and policies aimed at preventing and reducing harm from gambling amongst gaming workers. It is hypothesized that increased engagement with responsible gambling by gaming workers also improves employee participation and ease in identifying and assisting players in distress.

This session will reveal the outcomes that emerged from the research as well as the steps being taken to support gaming workers through problem and responsible gambling programming.
