Dr. Tim Fong

Dr. Fong is a Professor of Psychiatry at the Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior at UCLA. Dr. Fong completed his undergraduate and medical school at Northwestern University in Chicago. He then came to UCLA and finished his residency in adult general psychiatry in 2002 and was the first accredited addiction psychiatry fellow at the UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute (2002-2004).
Currently, he is the co-director of the UCLA Gambling Studies Program. The purpose of this program is to examine the underlying causes and clinical characteristics of gambling disorder to develop effective, evidence-based treatment strategies.
He is the Director of the UCLA Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship, a one-year program designed to provide a leading edge clinical and research training experience.
Dr. Fong’s research interests include gambling disorder, hyper sexual disorder and improving quality of treatment for addictive disorders.
Luck and Fate: Cultural, Social and Psychological Characteristics of Asian Gamblers
This presentation will provide a scientific and updated overview of the cultural, social, familial and psychological factors that promote demand for gambling among Asian American communities. Recent work in the areas of anthropology, psychology and sociology have begun to characterize why certain Asian American communities seek out gambling and what the implications are to those community members and families. Themes such as self-reliance, predetermined fate, collective mentality, acceptability of gambling has been shown to promote and sustain gambling. Other social factors such as casino marketing practices and how these practice influence (or don’t influence gambling) toward Asian communities will be explored. Barriers to treatment seeking and delivery of treatment for Asian gamblers will also be described. Particular emphasis will be placed on describing innovative and best practices to prevent problem gambling advancing responsible gambling practices for Asian American communities.
