The Gaming Industry: A Strategic Plan for Mitigating Gambling-Related Harm & Enhancing Employee and Workplace Wellness

Co-Presented with Ms. Sara Marchese

This session asserts the critical role of the workplace environment in the development and possible exacerbation towards gambling-related harm for casino employees and their family members. Numerous research studies have demonstrated the connection between the casino and gaming environment and a higher prevalence of problem and pathological gambling amongst casino and gaming site employees. The association between problem gambling and incidence of physical and mental health issues for individuals and the cross-generational impact of problem gambling within families has been well established.

Morneau Shepell proposes a model of care and partnership with casino and gaming industry employers that will maximize the effectiveness of mental health initiatives to increase awareness and encourage help-seeking behaviours within this affected group. The benefits of a systematic and targeted approach are wide-ranging, positioning casino and gaming industry employers to be leaders in innovative solutions within their industry and communities.
