Identifying Harm Among Machine Players: Findings From a Multicomponent Research Study

Co-presented with Mr. David Excell

In 2014, the Responsible Gambling Trust commissioned NatCen Social Research and Featurespace to investigate whether industry-held data from B2 gambling machines could be used to identify harmful patterns of play, and if so, to draw implications for responsible gambling interventions. A range of different research projects were conducted on loyalty card customers.

This allowed us to use, for the first time, fine-grained transactional data to explore how patterns of behaviour on machines vary between problem and non-problem gamblers. The limitations of this approach and of using loyalty card data in this way were also assessed.

BCLC New Horizons will be the first time these research results will be presented to an international audience.  We will discuss the benefits and limitations of the approach and the implications for responsible gambling interventions.
