Day One and Two Wrap-Up
What a start to the second annual New Horizons in Responsible Gambling conference! The conference kicked off Monday afternoon with a bonus workshop that provided pragmatic tips on how gambling facilities can implement measures to conserve energy. A panel of experts facilitated lively roundtable discussions sharing ideas on implementing sustainable changes in gaming facilities. Delegates then transitioned into an introductory networking reception sponsored by the Canadian Gaming Association. Along with the lively conversation about some of the opening sessions planned for the next day (and an impromptu karaoke rendition of ‘Waltzing Matilda’) delegates had some time to have a little fun in the Strategic Science photo-booth.
This morning began with an address from the Honorable Michael de Jong, British Columbia’s Finance Minister. During the opening remarks for the conference, BCLC announced its $2 million partnership with the province and UBC led by Centre Director Luke Clark. BCLC CEO Michael Graydon welcomed delegates and Dr. Jeff French (pictured) delivered a memorable keynote in which he shared ideas on social marketing, highlighting that 95% of human thought is unconscious, as well as some interesting anecdotes on influencing human behaviour. This session will no doubt be remembered as a conference highlight.
Our lunch panel revisited a prominent piece of RG research that has now reached its 10-year anniversary, The Reno Model. Dr. Alex Blaszczynski and Dr. Robert Ladouceur participated in a video/ interview session that reviewed the paper they wrote in the Nevada metropolis ten years ago. While the foundation of their ideas is still powerful they’ve evolved due to factors like online gambling and social gaming.
The day concluded with Dr. Mark Griffiths, back for his second New Horizons conference, sharing thoughts on the world of marketing and advertising by discussing the role social responsibility plays in gambling through maximizing opportunities and minimizing harm. Delegates were captivated by Dr. Griffiths’ enthusiasm.
There you have a short overview of what was a jam-packed Day two at New Horizons. Additional highlights include the Playscan sponsored sweet bar and abundant networking opportunities with an international group of experts. Now, we’re off to tonight’s Networking Reception generously sponsored by British Group. Check back tomorrow evening for an overview of Wednesday’s highlights!
